Lago Trasimeno is the 4th largest lake in Italy and it takes only 20 minutes by car: door to beach. (It is actually only 5 minutes from the route taken for most of the major sight seeing tours.) The best swimming spot is Castiglione del Lago. The water is clean and warm, the bottom is sandy and weed free.  There is easy, free parking and plenty of shady picnic spots under the trees.

There are several cafes on the beach. Other facilities include hire of sun loungers and umbrellas, changing cabins, showers,pedaloes, beach volleyball, table tennis.

It is also possible to take boat trips on the lake to the very pretty Isola Maggiore.
