If booking a one week holiday it may be worth exploring arriving a day early or departing a day or two later and exploring the area around the airport. This will then allow cheaper flights and add a 'city' dimension to your holiday.

I have flown for as little as £40 inclusive return. It pays to shop around. It also generally pays to book early particularly if you are travelling June to September as Saturday flights during this period rarely if ever get a last minute discount.

It is best to get a variety of quotes as prices vary and bargains can be had. Beware the extras e.g. the cost of not carrying a large excess or for extra drivers.

Hertz booked through Ryanair often looks cheap but beware the extras (particularly the excess). If arriving late at night they guarantee to meet the Ryanair planes even if there is a delay of an hour or two. Other companies charge an out of hours charge and are liable to close if you do not turn up on time.

Novarentacar: booking agent - this is often a good bet if 2 drivers as an extra driver is free and it costs a lot less than Hertz to remove any excess.
